Sometimes, you need to do too much.

Michael Bertel |

Two weeks ago, at 4:15 a.m. on the morning of Friday, after a hectic month, we wrapped up this project:

2 Packages

Just a few hours later, at 8am, the shipping company picked up these two "not-so-pretty" packages.

For us, this was a pretty big deal. Another part of our journey that you can't really enjoy because you're too tired, the packages haven't been delivered yet and the machines aren't installed and working in production yet.

Although I wouldn’t recommend (and it's not possible) having nights like this every night and it’s certainly not healthy, I would highly recommend going all out sometimes.

Because:

  • It has a signalling effect on partners.
  • You get to know your own limits.
  • You stand out by doing things that others simply can't do.
  • It creates memories and stories.
  • It brings fulfilment.
  • In the short term, it is possible.

It has a signalling effect on partners

Those who demonstrate a willingness to perform and endure hardship earn respect.

Repeat this behaviour and you'll build a great reputation with partners, co-founders, suppliers and customers alike.

It even works if you don't brag about it on LinkedIn!

You get to know your own limits.

If you participate in endurance sports, you'll understand.

You have to push your limits to find out what's actually possible.

In my opinion, life would be wasted if you didn't do that.

You stand out by doing things that others simply can't do.

Nights like this enable us to achieve things that our competitors, even those with much larger teams, cannot.

You can say 'yes' to opportunities that others can't, and you will deliver, which builds your reputation and has a signalling effect on everyone... QED.

It creates memories and stories.

If you do things that others can't, you will have interesting stories to tell.

Bonus: if you work with partners (co-founders, customers, friends, etc.), you will have shared experiences that you will talk about for years to come!

It brings fulfilment.

... This brings fulfilment. At least it does for me.

In the short term, it is possible.

Don't do this for a long period of time. I would recommend doing it for a few days or weeks, but definitely not months!
